Leadership for Learning: 2006 Summer Institutes

Leadership for Learning Cohort 3

As part of their summer institute experience, L4L Cohort 3 met at the Mt. Vernon school district with Carl Bruner, Superintendent and graduate of the L4L 1 cohort.

Each L4L3 interview team went to several places in the community. The teams (of about 2 people) had schedules that Carl put together. At the end of the day, the entire cohort met back at the district office to begin sharing all kinds of interesting perspectives.

The interviews included the Episcopalian Church, the Mt. Vernon summer literacy program at a middle school run by Craig Harpel (L4L Cohort 2), and the community gardening and tutoring center, run by a police officer.

Summer Institute

L4L Cohort 2 began their week long summer institute on July 17 at the Center for Urban Horticulture on the UW campus.

The focus for this year’s institute included getting capstone proposals finished, methods, human subjects, and general exams.

Brian Benzel, superintendent of Spokane Public Schools, spoke with the cohort about the debate around math curriculum and other issues that are relevant to many of the students’ internships.
